The Coastal Planning and Coordination Council is a statutory sub-committee of the WAPC and will oversee strategic planning for Western Australia's 27 000 km of coast.
Coastal development has been a controversial subject for the past decade and the State Government has recognised the need for better integrated decision-making and greater community involvement.
Legislating to create the council was a key recommendation of the Ministerial Taskforce established in 2002 to advise on how there could be better coastal planning.
David Wood, head of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at Curtin University, chairs the council with many years experience in coastal planning. Dr Wood is also a member of the WAPC to ensure an advocate for the coastline has direct input into WAPC development decisions.

One of the first tasks the council will have responsibility for is developing a metropolitan coastal policy to deal with the growing development pressures being applied to the metropolitan coastline.
The council will use community expectation to guide State Government policy especially in regard to the location, scale and density of developments appropriate for our coastline.
