As with the approach taken in the Draft Coastal Zone Management Policy for WA (2001), the definition of the coast for this project is limited to dealing with 'those parts of the coast normally referred to as the coastal zone, and comprising nearshore waters and the coastal foreshore'. None the less, consideration also may be given where necessary to other adjacent areas, which have a direct and significant impact on the coast, which also need to be used and managed in a way which recognises their potential to impact on the coast.
The strategy therefore covers the coastal area within the Metropolitan Region Scheme, extending from Two Rocks in the north to Singleton in the south, a distance of over 120 km. The east-west boundary will be 500 metres offshore (to allow for a consideration of the nearshore marine users and their requirements) and to the first main road inland. An adjacent 'zone of influence' landward of this road allows for the integration with broader council-wide planning. Any boundary identified will be arbitrary and only used as an indication of the zone of influence. The prime focus is the coastal reserve and its immediate interface landward and seaward.
