A masterplan to guide future development at Bayview Coral Bay has been approved.
The masterplan, approved by the Ningaloo Sustainable Development Committee, allows for a range of accommodation including a 4-star resort, self-contained apartments, a 3-star motel, chalets, and camping and caravan grounds.
Development outlined in the masterplan is in keeping with the natural environment and low-key feel of Coral Bay. The masterplan is about getting the future development of Coral Bay right so it continues to be a destination for Western Australian families.
The masterplan has been through a lengthy planning process that included public comment, stakeholder liaison, and detailed analysis.
Prior to development occurring, construction of a new residential village for Coral Bay business operators, employers and employees must be confirmed as there is currently a moratorium on development until this is committed to.
Individual development applications will need to be submitted to the Ningaloo Sustainable Development Committee for consideration and approval.
A number of State government infrastructure improvements have recently been undertaken in Coral Bay including a new boat launching facility, power and sewerage provision and a water supply.
Along with the construction of the new workers’ village, this infrastructure will allow Coral Bay to develop in accordance with the Ningaloo Coast Regional Strategy and provide an appropriate range of facilities for the growing number of visitors who are attracted to it.
The Ningaloo Coast Regional Strategy provides a comprehensive framework for sustainable tourism development on the Ningaloo coast from Carnarvon to Exmouth and manages the pressure from increasing visitor numbers.
The strategy includes a detailed plan for Coral Bay that recommends a moratorium on development in the short term and a long-term cap of 3600 overnight visitors.
