The WAPC has approved the redevelopment of Mt Hawthorn Hospital (Hawthorn House), Woodstock Street, Mt Hawthorn for a step-down intermediate mental health care facility.
The facility will provide a home-like environment for adults with mental health problems who do not require hospital care. Hawthorn House will provide a necessary community service by allowing people to manage their illness before returning to live independently in the community.
The WAPC took into account the concerns expressed by local residents on the possible impact on the neighbourhood and the many conditions recommended by the Town of Vincent.
The WAPC considered the facility was a suitable use in the local community and that following extensive consultation the proposal had been scaled down to address community concerns.
The WAPC imposed conditions on the redevelopment ensuring that it would only be operational for three years. Other conditions relate to exterior finishes and fixtures, fencing and landscaping. A community advisory committee will be established to address community concerns and complaints.
